A CULTURAL POSTCARD OF BITOLA

Bitola is a city with a millennium long history. During this long period it lived through many historical events, which imprinted deep traces in its cultural living. A lot of civilizations and spiritual influences were present here. Especially in the 19th century, it was a real cultural center in this part of the Balkan, and did not lag behind in any spheres of life characteristic for big urban centers in the neighboring and European countries. An attempt is also made to create a picture of what was going on in pre-historic time, antic periods, middle age, later centuries and the present time in order for someone to realize the richness of the cultural postcard of Bitola, viewed through the centuries.

In these texts about individual segments of the cultural existence of the city, mainly presented in a publicist-feuilleton manner, an attempt is made to touch at least some of the spiritual values that enriched the city in the past, with certain accents on the present.

    We decided the basic issue of observation to be the most specific examples, historical occurrences and social relations, making a special insight primarily into, the cultural occurrences in the certain space and time.
